Variability of the proton-to-electron mass ratio on cosmological scales

چکیده
The search for a possible variation of fundamental physical constants is newsworthy more than ever. A multitude of methods were developed. So far the only seemingly significant detection exists for the proton-to-electron mass ratio as stated by Reinhold et al. [1]. The positive detection is based on the combined analysis of H2 absorption systems in the spectra of Q0405-443 and Q0347-383 at zabs = 2.595 and zabs = 3.025, respectively. The high resolution data of the latter is reanalyzed in this work to examine the influence of different fitting procedures and further potential nonconformities. This analysis cannot reproduce the significance achieved by the previous detection.

A new constraint on cosmological variability of the proton-to-electron mass ratio
Kaluza-Klein theories and multidimensional cosmological models predict variability of the fundamental physical constants over the cosmic time. Using the VLT/UVES high resolution spectra of the quasar Q0347–3819 and numerous electronic-vibrationalrotational lines of the H2 molecule identified at zabs = 3.025 we test possible changes in the proton-to-electron mass ratio μ0 = mp/me over the period...
متن کاملPuzzle of the Constancy of Fundamental Constants
We discuss experiments and observations aimed at testing the possible space-time variability of fundamental physical constants, predicted by the modern theory. Specifically, we consider two of the dimensionless physical parameters which are important for atomic and molecular physics: the fine-structure constant and the electron-to-proton mass ratio. We review the current status of such experime...
متن کاملHighly accurate H2 Lyman and Werner band laboratory measurements and an improved constraint on a cosmological variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio.
Transition wavelengths on a large set of H2 Lyman and Werner band spectral lines have been obtained at an accuracy of 5 x 10(-8), using a narrow band tunable extreme ultraviolet laser. The data are used to determine a constraint on a possible cosmological variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio (mu=Mp/me) from a comparison with highly redshifted spectral data of quasistellar objects, yie...
متن کاملCurrent status of astronomical observations on possible cosmological variations of the proton - to - electron mass ratio μ = m p / m e
Astronomical constraints on a possible cosmological variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio μ = mp/me are discussed. The analysis of H2 lines observed in the spectra of distant quasars Q 0405-443 (zem = 3.02) and Q 0347-383 (zem = 3.22) is performed [1] using, partly, very precise values of H2 frequencies from new laboratory measurements [2] and sensitivity coefficients from new accurate...
متن کاملRobust Constraint on a Drifting Proton-to-Electron Mass Ratio at z 1⁄4 0:89 from Methanol Observation at Three Radio Telescopes
A limit on a possible cosmological variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio is derived from methanol (CH3OH) absorption lines in the benchmark PKS1830–211 lensing galaxy at redshift z 1⁄4 0:89 observed with the Effelsberg 100-m radio telescope, the Institute de Radio Astronomie Millimétrique 30-m telescope, and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. Ten different absorption lin...
